Frequently Asked Questions

I have practiced law since 2003, first serving as a prosecutor in Brazoria County, Texas, before opening my private practice in 2005. I practiced law as a public defender in Harris County, Texas, before practicing law as a federal prosecutor, and followed that by serving as an assistant and then senior assistant, Harris County district attorney.

Principally, I practice criminal defense, personal injury, and small business. I handle cases covered in the following areas of law:

Business or corporate law – Facilitates best legal practices for businesses and corporations

Civil rights law – Assists individuals who deal with discrimination and their constitutional rights

Criminal law – Individual liberty issues

Entertainment law – Intellectual property law, royalties, contracts, and rights

Real estate law – Deals with land and construction issues related to ownership and disputes

Family law – Handles divorces, adoption, custody, child abuse, civil unions, marriages, and other legal disputes between family members

Personal Injury – Handling cases involving financial recovery for physical injuries suffered

It depends. I bill differently depending on the type of case. I generally charge a flat fee for handling criminal cases. Personal Injury cases are handled on a contingent fee basis, which is a percentage of recovery. Most other cases are handled on a billable-time basis, which is an hourly rate.

I am a zealous advocate for my client. I am professional and ethical. I have a strong work ethic, and I try to work efficiently and effectively. Recognizing that time is money, I try to always work smarter. I try to maintain regular communication with my clients, but I like to spend my time working for you rather than in unnecessary meetings or redundancies.

During our first consultation, I will seek sufficient information to assess your case, which I will discuss fully with you. I will check for conflicts of interest that might interfere with my representation if I were to take your case.

Our communications are generally confidential and protected as such under attorney-client privilege. I generally take a practical approach to cases, my focus is on getting you the result you want, which will often require strategic negotiations and compromise.

Some cases move more slowly than others, and there may be longer periods when not much is happening. I try to keep my clients abreast of any action in their case and to communicate with them periodically to provide status reports orally or in writing and electronically.

No. I cannot guarantee an outcome. However, I will provide you with options and discuss the possible outcomes.

I usually handle my client cases myself. However, from time to time, I will work with other professionals as may be required to reach the best outcome for you. These other professionals may include lawyers, paralegals, legal researchers and clerical personnel.
